Managing everyday tasks when you live with a disability can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to something as essential as eating well. If you’re an NDIS participant, you may already know that your plan can fund supports to help with daily personal activities, but did you know that NDIS assistance with daily life can extend to meal preparation and delivery services? Understanding exactly how your Core Supports budget works, and what it covers, is the key to unlocking practical help that genuinely makes a difference. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about this funding category, how ready-made meal services fit in, and how to get started with ease.

What Is NDIS Assistance with Daily Life?

Assistance with Daily Life (ADL) is one of the support categories within your NDIS Core Supports budget. It funds the help you need with everyday personal tasks that you can’t do safely or easily on your own because of your disability. Think of it as the practical backbone of your plan, the supports that keep your day running smoothly.

According to the NDIS home and living guidelines, this category covers assistance or supervision of personal tasks during day-to-day life, enabling you to live as independently as possible. These supports can be provided in your own home, in shared living arrangements, or out in the community.

What Assistance with Daily Life Covers

The types of daily activities covered under ADL include:

  • Personal care such as showering, dressing, and grooming
  • Household tasks including cleaning, laundry, and yard maintenance
  • Meal preparation and delivery
  • Support with getting around your home safely
  • Help with shopping and running errands

It’s important to note that ADL sits under your Core Supports budget. Your Core Supports budget is generally the most flexible part of your NDIS plan. In most cases, you can move funding between Core categories such as:

  • Assistance with Daily Life
  • Consumables
  • Transport
  • Assistance with Social & Community Participation

This flexibility applies as long as the support is:

  • Reasonable and necessary
  • Clearly linked to your NDIS goals

There are some exceptions. For example, certain Transport items or stated supports can be less flexible. It’s always worth checking the details of your plan or speaking with your planner or Plan Manager to be sure.

How Meal Preparation and Delivery Fit into Your NDIS Plan

Here’s where things get practical. If cooking safely or consistently is a challenge because of your disability, your NDIS plan can fund meal preparation and delivery as part of your Assistance with Daily Life supports. The NDIS operational guidelines for nutrition support confirm that meal preparation support falls within the Core Supports category, covering assistance with essential household tasks that you’re unable to do yourself.

There are two main ways meal support can work under your NDIS plan:

1. Support Worker Assistance with Meals

You can use your Core funding to have a support worker help you plan, shop for, and prepare meals at home. This option works well if you’re building independence in the kitchen and want hands-on guidance.

2. Ready-Made Meal Delivery Services

If cooking isn’t practical for you, ready-made meal delivery is a fantastic alternative. The NDIS can fund the preparation and delivery costs of meals from approved providers. You’ll pay a small co-payment to cover the cost of ingredients (since everyone needs to pay for food, regardless of disability), while the NDIS covers the rest.

As highlighted by the NDIS guidelines on nutrition supports, participants with Core funding for meal preparation can use this flexibly, meaning if your circumstances change and you need to switch from support worker help to meal delivery, you can do so without changing your plan.

Understanding the Co-Payment Structure

One of the most common questions NDIS participants have is about costs. The co-payment model is straightforward once you understand how it works.

The NDIS considers food an everyday living expense that everyone incurs, so the ingredient portion of your meals is your responsibility. However, the preparation, cooking, and delivery costs are considered disability-related supports and can be funded through your plan.

How NDIS Meal Co-Payments Work

Because food and groceries are treated as everyday living costs, the NDIS only funds the preparation and delivery components of your meals. Under the NDIS nutrition supports guideline:

  • If a provider separates the cost of food from the cost of preparation and delivery on the invoice, participants can generally claim 100% of the preparation and delivery amount from their Core budget and pay separately for the ingredients.
  • If a provider doesn’t separate the food cost, participants can usually claim up to 70% of the total invoice, with the remaining amount treated as their co-payment for food and other everyday costs.

At Nourish’d, we separate the ingredient cost on your invoice so that your NDIS plan currently covers 80% of the total meal cost, while you pay a 20% co-payment for the ingredients. You can learn more about how this works in our copayment guide.

Why Nutrition Matters for NDIS Participants

Good nutrition isn’t just about filling your stomach; it’s about fuelling your body with what it needs to function at its best. For people living with disabilities, this becomes even more critical. Research from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows that Australians with disabilities are more likely to experience chronic health conditions, making a balanced diet essential for managing overall wellbeing.

The Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend that adults consume a variety of nutritious foods every day, including:

  • Plenty of vegetables
  • Lean proteins
  • Whole grains

Yet for NDIS participants who find shopping and cooking challenging, meeting these guidelines can feel like an uphill battle.

That’s exactly where a quality meal delivery service makes a real difference. When your meals are already prepared by chefs and reviewed by nutritionists, you don’t have to worry about whether you’re getting the right balance of nutrients. It’s one less thing on your plate (pun intended), so you can focus your energy on the things that matter most to you.

How Nourish’d Supports NDIS Participants

At Nourish’d, we’re proud to be an approved NDIS meal provider, and we’ve made it our mission to take the stress out of mealtimes for participants and their support networks. Here’s what makes us different:

100% Gluten-Free and Coeliac Safe

Every single meal on our menu is 100% gluten-free and Coeliac Australia Endorsed. All of our products are independently lab-tested, so they’re verified safe for people with coeliac disease and gluten sensitivity. If you or someone you care for lives with coeliac disease or gluten sensitivity, you can order with complete confidence.

Fresh, Chef-Crafted Meals Delivered to Your Door

Unlike many meal providers that deliver frozen food, our meals arrive fresh, never frozen, and typically stay fresh in your fridge for around 4 to 7 days, depending on the meal. Each meal comes with a clearly marked use-by date. We always recommend following this as your main guide. They’re made with locally sourced ingredients, free from artificial preservatives and refined sugars. Simply heat and eat in minutes.

Some NDIS-friendly Nourish’d meals that participants often enjoy include:

  • Cottage Pie: Classic comfort food topped with creamy mashed potato.
  • Slow Cooked Beef Stew: A rich, slow-cooked beef dish with tender meat and vegetables in a hearty, comforting sauce.
  • Italian Sausage Gnocchi: Soft, gluten-free gnocchi tossed with Italian-style sausage in a savoury tomato-based sauce for a warming, satisfying meal.

You can browse our full NDIS meal menu to find meals that suit your taste and dietary needs. We cater to a wide range of preferences, including:

  1. Dairy-free
  2. Low-calorie

How to Check If Meal Delivery Is in Your NDIS Plan

Not sure whether your NDIS plan covers meal delivery? Here’s a quick way to find out.

Signs Your Plan May Cover Meal Delivery

Log in to your MyPlace portal and look for one of these indicators under your Core Supports:

  • "Daily Activities" are listed in your Core Supports budget
  • "Assistance with the Cost of Preparation and Delivery of Meals" as a stated line item (support item code 01_023_0120_1_1)
  • "Meal preparation and delivery" is mentioned under your support descriptions

How Flexible Is Your Meal Preparation Funding?

If your plan includes funding for meal preparation under Core Supports, you usually have some flexibility in how that support is delivered.

The NDIS nutrition supports guideline explains that this funding sits in your Core budget and is flexible, so if you have meal preparation supports in your plan, you may, for a limited time, be able to use that funding for prepared and delivered meals instead of a support worker. For example, this may apply if you are isolating or your usual supports are temporarily unavailable.

When You Need to Double-Check with the NDIA

You still need to spend your funding as described in your plan. The guideline makes it clear that you can only use Core funding for meal preparation if the NDIA agrees it meets the funding criteria and describes it in your plan.

If meal preparation or meals are not mentioned, it is important to check with the NDIA, your My NDIS contact, Local Area Coordinator, Support Coordinator or Plan Manager before relying on Core funding for ongoing meal delivery.

If you are still unsure, speak with your Support Coordinator, Local Area Coordinator, or Plan Manager. You can also get in touch with our team, and we will help you figure it out.

What NDIS Assistance with Daily Life Does Not Cover

While ADL funding is flexible, it’s helpful to know what falls outside its scope so you can plan your budget wisely. According to the NDIS home and living information, the following are not covered:

  • The cost of food and groceries (this is considered a day-to-day living expense)
  • Fast food, takeaway, or orders from delivery platforms like Uber Eats or DoorDash
  • Household supplies such as cleaning products and toiletries
  • Personal items unrelated to your disability
  • Entertainment costs like movie or concert tickets

This is why the co-payment model exists for meal delivery services. Your NDIS funding covers the preparation and delivery component (the disability-related support), while you contribute the ingredient cost (the everyday expense everyone shares).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my NDIS funding for meal delivery?

Yes, if your NDIS plan includes Core Supports funding for daily activities or meal preparation, you can use it to access ready-made meal delivery services. The NDIS covers the cost of meal preparation and delivery, while you pay a small co-payment for ingredients. You can learn more about checking your eligibility in our NDIS meal delivery guide.

How much is the NDIS co-payment for meals?

Your co-payment covers the cost of food ingredients, because the NDIS treats food as an everyday living expense. Under the NDIS nutrition supports guideline, if a provider can’t separate the cost of food from preparation and delivery, participants can generally claim up to 70% of the total invoice from their Core budget and pay the remaining portion themselves. At Nourish’d, we separate the ingredient cost on your invoice so that your NDIS plan currently covers 80% of the total meal cost, and you pay a 20% co-payment for the ingredients. Visit our copayment information page for the most up-to-date figures.

Do I need an NDIS quote for meal delivery?

It depends on your plan. Some participants need a quote approved by the NDIA, while others can access meal delivery flexibly through their Core budget. Our team can help you work out what applies to your situation. Find out more in our NDIS quote guide.

Are Nourish’d meals suitable for people with coeliac disease?

Every Nourish’d meal is 100% gluten-free and Coeliac Australia Endorsed. Our meals are independently lab-tested to ensure they meet the strictest safety standards. Read more about our Coeliac Australia endorsement in our detailed blog.

What’s the difference between Assistance with Daily Life and Improved Daily Living?

Assistance with Daily Life is a Core Support that funds ongoing help with everyday tasks like meal prep, personal care, and household chores. Improved Daily Living, on the other hand, is a Capacity Building support that funds therapy and skills development to help you become more independent over time. You can read more about the differences in our NDIS Improved Daily Living guide.

How fresh are Nourish’d meals?

Our meals are delivered fresh, never frozen, and generally stay at their best in the fridge for around 4 to 7 days from delivery, depending on the meal. We use natural preservation methods like blast chilling to lock in freshness and nutrients without relying on artificial preservatives. Each meal has a clearly marked use- by date. Always follow this date for the most accurate guide to how long your meal will keep.

What happens if my NDIS plan is extended or changes?

If your plan is extended or reassessed, simply let us know, and we’ll adjust your account accordingly. You can find helpful information in our guide on what to do if your NDIS plan is extended.
