Managing meals at home shouldn't feel overwhelming, especially when you're trying to stay independent and well-nourished. If you or someone you love is navigating the aged care system, Commonwealth Home Support Program providers can offer entry-level, government-subsidised meal support that makes everyday life easier. With thousands of older Australians already using CHSP services, the right provider can help you eat well, save energy, and feel more confident at home. In this guide, we'll walk through how the program works, why nutrition matters as you age, and what to look for in a meal provider so you can make informed, stress-free choices.

What Is the Commonwealth Home Support Programme?

The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) is a government-funded initiative designed to help older Australians live independently in their own homes for longer. Rather than doing everything for you, the programme works alongside you to maintain your independence and keep you as healthy as possible.

What Support Does CHSP Provide?

According to the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, the CHSP has been extended from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2027, providing continued access to vital services, including:

  • Meal preparation and delivery
  • Domestic assistance
  • Transport
  • Social support
  • Allied health services

This extension ensures eligible Australians can continue to receive the support they need while the new Support at Home programme is fully implemented.

Who Can Access CHSP and How?

To access CHSP services, you'll need to be:

  • 65 years or older
  • 50 years or older for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Assessed through My Aged Care

Once approved, you’ll receive a referral code that connects you with registered service providers in your area.

Why Nutrition Matters for Older Australians

Here's a sobering reality: research from Healthdirect Australia notes that up to one in every two older Australians living in aged care or at home are either at risk of malnutrition or already malnourished. This isn't simply about not eating enough. It is about not getting the right nutrients to support healthy ageing.

A Monash University study found that four in ten residents of residential aged care facilities are malnourished. The consequences extend far beyond feeling tired or run down.

The Real Impacts of Malnutrition

Malnutrition in older people is linked to:

  • Increased hospitalisation rates
  • Higher risk of falls and fractures
  • Slower wound healing
  • Weakened immune function
  • Accelerated loss of independence

Why It’s Hard to Eat Well at Home

As highlighted by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission, poor nutrition amongst older adults is associated with increased incidence of falls and fractures, infection, and longer recovery times from injury. For many older Australians living at home, accessing nutritious meals can be challenging due to:

  • Mobility issues
  • Fatigue
  • Finding cooking overwhelming

How CHSP Meal Services Work

Meal services are one of the most popular supports accessed through the CHSP. Following a recent $37 million funding boost for meal providers, more than 500 organisations funded under the CHSP Meals service type now receive additional support from the Australian Government. This makes it easier for older Australians to access nutritious meals at affordable prices.

How Funding and Contributions Work

Under the CHSP:

  • Providers receive government funding to subsidise the cost of their services
  • You pay a client contribution towards each meal
  • Costs vary by provider and location, in line with the national CHSP Client Contribution Framework
  • You will never be asked to cover the full cost of a CHSP service

What's Included in CHSP Meal Support

CHSP meal services can include:

  • Ready-to-heat meals delivered to your door
  • In-home meal preparation assistance
  • Dietitian consultations for personalised nutrition plans
  • Meals tailored to dietary requirements, such as gluten-free, low-sodium, or diabetes-friendly options

CHSP-funded meal services are designed to provide nutritious meals that support older people’s health. National Meal Guidelines for CHSP meals are based on the Australian Dietary Guidelines, so providers are encouraged to offer menus that support a balanced intake of:

  • Vegetables
  • Protein
  • Whole grains
  • Other key nutrients

The exact meals available will vary between providers.

Choosing the Right CHSP Meal Provider

With more than 1,300 CHSP providers across Australia, finding the right fit requires some consideration. Here's what to look for when selecting your meal provider.

Dietary Requirements and Quality

If you manage specific dietary needs such as coeliac disease, diabetes, or food intolerances, choose a provider with expertise in these areas. At Nourish'd, we specialise in 100% gluten-free meals that are Coeliac Australia Endorsed, meaning you can trust every meal is safe and delicious. Our meals are also preservative-free, made fresh (not frozen), and delivered directly to your door.

Convenience and Flexibility

Consider how meals are delivered and how easy they are to prepare. Look for providers offering:

  • Contactless delivery
  • Simple heating instructions
  • Flexible ordering options

Our home care meal programme includes set-and-forget subscription options, so you never have to place orders manually each week.

Working With Your Provider

Under the Commonwealth Home Support Program, your CHSP meal provider receives funding directly from the Australian Government to subsidise the cost of your meals. You then pay an agreed client contribution towards each meal, in line with the provider's contribution policy. If you also have a Home Care Package or Support at Home funding, your package provider may help coordinate your meals and contributions on your behalf, and you'll still only pay part of the cost, not the full price.

If you're unsure whether your provider works with your preferred meal delivery service, you can check our list of partner providers or ask us to engage your nominated provider on your behalf.

Meals That Support Healthy Ageing

The right meals can make all the difference in maintaining strength, energy, and overall wellbeing.

Key Nutrients Older Australians Benefit From

Older Australians need:

  • Adequate protein to maintain muscle mass and help prevent sarcopenia, which is the age-related loss of muscle strength
  • Calcium and vitamin D for bone health
  • Fibre for digestive function
  • Adequate hydration to support overall health

Our Slow Cooked Beef Stew is slow cooked with quality grass-fed beef, packed with root vegetables, and finished with a rich tomato base for a hearty, comforting meal that still feels genuinely nourishing.

For something lighter, our Peri Peri Chicken with Tomato Rice and Green Beans features juicy chicken thigh marinated in a peri peri blend, served with tomato-infused basmati rice and crisp green beans for a high-protein, feel-good option with plenty of flavour.

Diabetes Friendly Choices

For those managing diabetes or watching carbohydrate intake, our diabetes friendly meal options are designed to help moderate blood sugar levels while still delivering satisfying, flavourful meals.

Getting Started With CHSP Meal Services

  • Step 1: Contact My Aged Care or visit their website to register and request an assessment.
  • Step 2: An aged care assessor, organised through My Aged Care, will speak with you, usually by visiting you at home or via phone or video, to understand your needs and determine your eligibility for CHSP services.
  • Step 3: Once approved, you'll receive a referral code and support plan outlining your approved services.
  • Step 4: Choose your preferred meal provider and provide them with your referral code to begin receiving subsidised meals.
