O M Ghee! Have you heard of ghee? If you haven’t, let us fill you in.
What is Ghee?
Ghee is clarified butter that is typically used in the cuisines of India and the Middle East. It’s made by gently heating butter made from cow's milk until all of its water content evaporates and the milk solids can be strained out. This leaves behind the liquid fat that we call ghee! As the milk solids have been skimmed and strained, ghee doesn’t need to be refrigerated and can be kept at room temperature for several weeks.
The Health Benefits
Ghee has many health benefits. It is made from all natural butter which means that it is free from any potentially unhealthy additives, preservatives and trans fats. As a result of its low-heat preparation, ghee retains more vitamins and nutrients. Some of these include Vitamin E, Vitamin A, antioxidants and other organic compounds. Eating fat-rich foods such as ghee may improve the bioavailability and absorption of those healthy vitamins and minerals.
Should I Choose Ghee Over Regular Butter?
When comparing the two, there is not a lot of hard evidence that suggests ghee is a healthier option in comparison to regular butter. However, ghee may be the better option for those who suffer from lactose intolerance, allergies or sensitivities to dairy. This is because it is free from milk sugar lactose and milk protein casein, whereas regular butter contains traces of both. Many people that cannot eat butter are able to consume ghee with no side affects.
