After talking to a few people around the traps, particularly in the health industry, I’m pi$$ed. And I want to send a very straight forward message into the world – Winter is not an excuse to ditch your health!
A season should not define your habits – just as you wouldn’t stop hanging out with your friends because Autumn has rolled into town, so you shouldn’t ditch your food & exercise routine just because winter has arrived.
It’s cold, so what!
Imagine if the Inuits of Alaska (where the temperature on average is 6.5 degrees) decided not to go to work because it’s cold out? Or the people of Seattle don’t leave their houses on days it rains – approximately one third of the year! In this context it seem ludicrous to discontinue the basic functions of life due to inclement weather, so why do we allow ourselves, sitting in temperate, comfortable Australia, to use it as an excuse?
Undoubtedly at different times of year we feel like doing different things – and with winter comes the desire to stay in, snuggle down, and order in take out. The test of character is how you react to these desires – at some point you need to stand up and say ‘I’m an adult, it’s my responsibility to make the right choices for my health, no one else is going to do it for me.’
So get up, eat well, hit the pavement/yoga studio/gym, and live your life. Don’t be defined by the weather, be defined by your ability to make smart choices.
